What True Anilox Cleaning Really Looks Like

When printers think about anilox cleaning, it's often viewed as routine maintenance. A task that gets completed during a shutdown and checked off the list.

It is a highly technical process that directly impacts ink transfer, print density, color consistency, and overall press efficiency. When cleaning is ineffective, contamination remains trapped inside the cells, leading to reduced cell volume, inconsistent print results, increased waste, and, in some cases, premature roll replacement.

The difference between a roll that simply looks clean and one that is truly clean can have a significant impact on press performance and profitability.

Surface Clean vs. Deep Clean

Many conventional cleaning methods remove only the contamination visible on the surface of the anilox roll. While the roll may appear cleaner to the eye, dried ink, coatings, and debris often remain compacted deep within the cells.

This type of surface cleaning may improve appearance, but it rarely restores performance.

True deep cleaning removes contamination throughout the entire depth of the engraved cells, restoring effective volume and allowing the anilox to release ink predictably and consistently.

This becomes increasingly important with high line-count anilox rolls, where even minor blockages can significantly affect ink transfer and print quality.

Anilox rolls are precision-engineered components.

Every cell is laser engraved with a specific geometry, including:

    • Cell depth

These characteristics are carefully designed to deliver a defined ink volume, typically measured in BCM/in² or cm³/m². Because of this precision, cleaning methods must be carefully controlled.

The goal of cleaning is not simply to remove contamination. It is to remove contamination while preserving the integrity of the ceramic surface and the original engraving geometry.

Effective anilox cleaning should never be a reactive process performed only when print quality deteriorates.
Instead, it should be a controlled, repeatable process with standardized procedures. Key variables that
influence cleaning effectiveness include:

    • Chemistry concentration
    • Dwell time
    • Cleaning temperature
    • Mechanical action
